Top of pageThe Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), effective April 21, 2000, applies to the online collection of personal information from children under 13. This rule spells out what a web site operator must include in a privacy policy, when and how to seek verifiable consent from a parent and what responsibilities an operator has to protect children's privacy and safety online. Here is a link to the US Government COPPA Page, which explains what COPPA is and does. Federal Trade Commission.
The Children's Online Privacy Protection Act and Rule apply to individually
identifiable information about a child that is collected online. This can
get very complicated as a web operator. This is why I will not accept any
information or communications from children under the age of 18. If any
children wish to contact me for anything they must get their parents to
ask for them, or give us permission to communicate in writing. Submitting
information to my site for any reason is certifying you are at least 18 years of age.
I would like to refer you to an editorial view from Mr. Steve Paul Johnson published in one of Interment.net's columns. I think he hits the nail right on the head as far as my views of several things relating to this subject. The column is called Fear Of The Unknown, and is the way I feel about the privacy of the deceased, and information put on gravestones. While this is the way that I feel about this subject, I will honor legitimate requests to mask pertinent information from public view. This means that I will omit all information except the First and Last name from my online records and replace the information with "On File".
